James Gillespie's is top of the class

The new James Gillespie’s High School won two top awards at the Scottish Property Awards last night.

The new school, which opened its doors to pupils in August 2016, won both Public Building categories (external link) – Architectural Excellence and Development of the Year.

The school, which was designed by JM Architects, presented a unique challenge for everyone involved – creating a campus of three new buildings (teaching block, sports and performance buildings) that would sit sensitively alongside the A-listed Bruntsfield House at the centre of the campus, which was also refurbished as part of the project.

During the design process, the architects took on board the views of pupils and staff to come up with a modern, fit-for-purpose site that provides a campus everyone can be proud of.

The project has received significant Scottish Government funding through the ‘Scotland’s Schools for the Future’ programme which is managed by the Scottish Futures Trust. The new school was delivered by Hub South East Scotland with Morrison Construction being the contractor.

Cllr Cammy Day, Education Convener, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for all those involved. It has been a unique education construction project in Scotland with new buildings across the nursery, primary and secondary schools and I know pupils, parents and staff are delighted with the facilities. This is the type of high quality learning facilities we want to deliver across the city.”

“This is a modern, fit-for-purpose educational site which is delivering an unrivalled learning environment for pupils of all ages. The project has given the James Gillespie’s school community a campus they can rightly be proud of and it will serve the community for many years to come.”

Paul McGirk, Hub South East’s Chief Executive, said: “We’re delighted that the James Gillespie’s Campus was recognised at the Scottish Property Awards. The feedback from staff and pupils on their new facilities has been fantastic and this is testament to the real team effort from the Council, Hub South East and its supply chain in designing and delivering the project. We look forward to continuing this successful partnership on future developments.”
