Work is underway to build a new nursery and primary school in Winchburgh.
The £16 million Hawkhill Primary School is due to open in August 2025. The new school is required to meet a significant increase in demand for school and nursery places in the area, which is a Core Development Area within West Lothian.
Winchburgh Developments Ltd. will fully fund the construction of the eight-classroom school with 80-place early-learning pre-school facility, sports pitches, landscaping and car-parking.
Leader of West Lothian Council Lawrence Fitzpatrick said: “This is an exciting project and it’s fantastic to see construction get underway. This new school will provide a safe and inspiring learning environment for generations of local youngsters and that is something very special.
“I look forward to seeing how the development progresses.”
John Hamilton, CEO of Winchburgh Developments Ltd., said: “This project adds state-of-the-art education facilities to the eastern section of the Winchburgh masterplan, ensuring that modern, well-equipped school facilities are now available to families living in Winchburgh and those moving here as the town grows.
“Winchburgh Developments Ltd. is proud to fully support — in the transfer of land and funding commitments — these transformational facilities for primary age-children, and we look forward to the opening next year.”
Hub South East will lead on the delivery of the new build single stream primary school, on behalf of West Lothian Council, which will be built by Morrison Construction, with a flexible design from jmarchitects that will allow for future expansion if required in future.
Ian Bowd, Hub South East’s Projects Director, said: “We’re excited to be marking the start of work on site for this exciting new primary school for Winchburgh. This project further strengthens our successful partnership with West Lothian Council, having delivered a number of award-winning projects together and we’re proud to be entrusted with this latest investment in its education estate.
“As we progress the new Hawkhill Primary, we will ensure the delivery of an inspiring new learning space for pupils and staff, as well as the realisation of social value through a programme of community benefits during construction.”
David Ewing, Managing Director for Morrison Construction Building Central, commented: “We are delighted to be underway with our partners at West Lothian Council, Hub South East and Winchburgh Development Ltd to deliver another new school for the Winchburgh community.
“As a group, we have demonstrated a strong track record for creating high-quality educational facilities and we look forward to producing another great school for the staff and students of Hawkhill.”
