Christmas comes early for Grassmarket Community Project as Hub South East delivers £24k

Thursday, 21 December 2017 @ 04:32

Hub South East, Development Partner to public sector bodies in Edinburgh, the Lothians and Borders, today presented the Grassmarket Community Project (GCP) with £24,000 thanks to a Charity Golf Day held earlier this year.

This is the second event organised by Hub South East, after previously raising £15,000 for GCP in 2015. Hub’s three Tier One Contractors – BAM, GRAHAM and Morrison Construction were the primary sponsors of this year’s event and were present to meet the Charity’s team and members whilst handing over the cheque.

The money raised will be used by GCP to transform a space in its building for one-to-one counselling and support, as well as helping fund the qualified counsellors to provide this much-needed service.

In addition to this, the money will support an outreach service to connect with people that the Project haven’t had contact with for some time. Some of GCPs vulnerable members struggle to even leave the house and this will enable the set up of specific groups to engage people who are the most isolated.

Jo Elliot, Hub South East’s Chair said: “We are immensely proud that since 2015 Hub South East has continued to support the Grassmarket Community Project, an inspiring local charity and social enterprise making a real difference to the lives of its members.

“Thanks to the sponsorship of our three main contractors, as well as the support of a great number of supply chain partners, we raised a fantastic £24,000 at our 2017 Charity Golf Day - demonstrating that the Hub programme can deliver real community benefit.

“The Project’s plans to deliver a much-needed counselling service and outreach programme are exciting and we are honoured to be able to play our part in making these ambitions a reality.”

Jonny Kinross, Chief Executive of Grassmarket Community Project, said: “We are totally overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity that Hub South East and its supply chain has shown our project and the people we support. The Charity Golf Day was hugely successful and yet again the Hub team, its suppliers and partners have proven themselves to be committed to supporting many of Edinburgh’s most vulnerable and isolated people. We cannot thank them enough.

“Homelessness, developing mental health problems or not coping due to physical illness or disability could happen to any one of us, or someone we know of care about. it’s good to know that a charity like ours, with this kind of support, will be there to help you or your loved one if needed.

“Last year we supported over 500 people living on the extreme edges of society, facing multiple barriers to working and living a decent quality of life. To many we are the only family they have. With the support of Hub South East we can continue to reach out to the people facing the most difficult circumstances and help them re-build their lives.”

Bruce Dickson, BAM Construction’s Regional Director said: “At BAM we strongly believe in supporting the local communities that we work in and that we can make a difference. We were delighted to be offered the opportunity by Hub South East to participate in this event and that as a result we have helped, along with our fellow sponsors and members of our supply chains, to raise such a significant amount of money for the Grassmarket Community Project. These are inspirational people doing amazing things and we hope that these funds allow them to keep making that difference.”

Craig Bridges, Regional Development Director at GRAHAM Construction said: “Supporting our local communities together with the lasting legacy of the projects we are delivering lie at the heart of our business in Scotland. We continue to work in partnership with Hub South East and are delighted to have supported this event. Grassmarket Community Project is an incredible organisation which makes such a huge difference, especially around this time of year. The funds raised will help people across Edinburgh through counselling and outreach – having a lasting impact. Well done and thank you to everyone involved.”

David Wilson, Operations Director for Morrison Construction, said: “It has been a great privilege to play a continuing part in Hub South East’s Charity Golf Day and to give back to the communities in which we work. Most importantly we’ve raised much needed funds and helped to raise awareness of the Grassmarket Community Project and its valuable work to a wider audience. We first engaged with the team at Grassmarket in 2015 supplying timber from trees felled from the Royal Edinburgh Hospital site and it has been great to see the timber come to life through the initiatives undertaken within the project.
